Atlanta Selected to Host 2012 Sports Diversity Awards and StandUp Magazine Launch
ATLANTA – October 25, 2012 — Atlanta, home to three major sports franchises, has been chosen to host the 2012 Compete Sports Diversity Awards and StandUp Magazine Launch Engineered by Lexus. The November 14th event will be hosted by StandUp Magazine publishers Eric Carlyle and Patrick Davis. Former NBA player, Matt Fish, will MC the event and rugby World Cup champion Ben Cohen, MBE will be in attendance.
“Atlanta was picked because of its dedication to both amateur and professional sports and because it is the headquarters of the Ben Cohen StandUp Foundation” said Carlyle. “And Lexus is a natural fit to serve as our Title Sponsor.”
The night will celebrate the second annual awards as it honors individuals and organizations who help fulfill Compete’s mission of uniting the gay and straight communities through sports. Featured awards include the sixth annual Compete Athlete of the Year Award, Corporate Diversity Award and the StandUp Ally Award, whose winner is selected by StandUp Magazine.
The evening will also mark the launch of StandUp Magazine, a sister publication to Compete. Carrying the tagline, “True Champions Stand Up,” StandUp Magazine will debut its fall issue at the event. It features Ben Cohen, MBE on the cover. The print publication will highlight the positive stories and social impact of sports men and women wherever they play – from community fields to major universities to the global professional sports arena.
Ben Cohen, Chairman of the Foundation said, “It is time to celebrate a return to true sportsmanship and the spirit of fairness at its core. As sports role models, we have an incredible opportunity with StandUp Magazine to set an example for character in action, celebrating all sports and creating good on and off the field.”
Representatives from the National Basketball Retired Players Association (NBRPA) will be at the event in support of the Awards & StandUp Magazine’s launch.
Event partners include Lexus (Title Sponsor), Microsoft (Presenting Sponsor), Nike (Partner Sponsor), Orbitz (Athlete of the Year Award Sponsor) and Logo and David Atlanta (Media Sponsors). Additional partners will be announced shortly.
It is fitting for this launch to take place on November 14th, which also serves as StandUp Day, in memory of Cohen’s father who was lost that day in 2000 to violence when he was standing up for someone who was being attacked.
The event will be held at TWELVE Atlantic Station on November 14, 2012. The pre-event reception with Ben Cohen starts at 6:30pm; awards dinner is 7:30pm – 9:30pm. General admission tickets are available for $125. VIP tickets, which include the pre-event reception, are available for $250. Tickets can be purchased here.
